Tips
One of the oldest heirloom black tomato varieties, native to the southern Ukraine and bred for its ability to absorb maximum heat and light in short, unpredictable summers. A rare beefsteak blessed with thick crisp skin, rich meaty texture and a deep, luscious earthy flavor. May induce an heirloom tomato obsession.
Indeterminate (produces all season).
Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost, with soil temp about 75°F Start in flats and move to larger containers while still small. Transplant to garden well after last frost.
deep-rooted, heat-loving plants that like sun, lots of moisture, and soil rich in phosphorus (but not too much nitrogen)
helps to harden off the seedlings (bring them outside during the day) before transplanting
cage or trellis suggested to save space and protect fruit; recommended for indeterminate varieties, which tend to sprawl
row covers and black plastic “mulch” keeps soil warm and hurries the crop along
pruning foliage and less water in late summer/early fall supports fruit maturation
plants can handle light frosts if covered, especially at night; fruit will continue to ripen even if foliage freezes; or pull up plant and hang upside down indoors, away from sun
