This fast-growing, frost-tolerant onion family member is loaded with vitamins K and A and has a sweet, delicate flavor. Wonderful raw or sautéed, in soups, stews or salads, and is gentle on your digestive system. Accumulates and stores body-nourishing minerals in its bulb.
Start seeds indoors in March, 8 to 10 weeks before the last expected frost, with soil temp about 75°F. Sow ¼” apart and ¼” deep. Plant out in May, after last frost, in rich, well-drained soil, 6” apart and about 6” deep. As the plants grow, hill soil around the stems being careful not to get soil in leaf notches. Hilling creates a longer blanched and tender stalk.
