An extremely hardy and productive heirloom dating back to at least 1860’s. An early variety with delicious curly blue-green leaves on a compact, frost-resistant plant. We harvest the bottom leaves as the plant grows and it gradually comes to look like a palm tree with greens above a long stalk. Worth making a garden staple. Leaves also make a nice pale yellow fabric dye.
Direct seed outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked or when soil temperature reaches 40 ℉. Plant 1/4" to 1/2" deep, 2" apart, thin to 18" apart.
young leaves make great salad greens
mark plants with stakes in the fall so you can harvest leaves in the snow; frost improves its flavor
like other members of the broccoli family (brassica), it likes rich soil and plenty of moisture
fresh chopped leaves source of pale yellow fabric dye
companion planting aromatic herbs (lemon balm, sage, oregano, borage, hyssop, dill, rosemary) and/or high blossom flowers like tall marigolds and calendulas near or among brassicas helps keep pests away; or make our cabbage moth decoy (details on our blog)
