This “Southern” green actually does very well in our northern climate. The large, open succulent dark green leaves have a distinctive hearty flavor and are full of vitamins. Leaf green make an excellent wrapper for raw sandwiches.
Direct seed outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked or when soil temperature reaches 40 ℉. Plant 1/4" to 1/2" deep, 2" apart, thin to 18" apart. We eat the thinnings as we go!
shallow-rooted and, like other members of the broccoli family (brassica), likes rich soil and plenty of moisture
excellent braised or sautéed
wonderful leaf for making sandwich wraps - remove center vein and roll raw; to tenderize, rub with olive oil or steam lightly
companion planting aromatic herbs (lemon balm, sage, oregano, borage, hyssop, dill, rosemary) and/or high blossom flowers like tall marigolds and calendulas near or among brassicas helps keep pests away; or make our cabbage moth decoy (details on our blog)
