Tips
Beautiful deep red cabbage with hard compact heads and great flavor. Direct sowing seeds for later fall harvest produces smaller heads that store well through winter. Leaves make a pretty blue dye.
Start seeds indoors about 8 weeks before last frost; keep at 50-70℉ for at least 5 weeks before transplanting. Plant seeds 1/4” deep, and thin to about 20” apart. For fall harvests direct sow in early June.
shallow-rooted cool weather plants that like regular watering, rich soil & mulch
protect young plants from frost
mature plants withstand temp drops to about 10℉
twisting head of mature cabbage until stem cracks stops growth while keeping head crisp and fresh in ground until you are ready to harvest
companion planting aromatic herbs (lemon balm, sage, oregano, borage, hyssop, dill, rosemary) and/or high blossom flowers (tall marigold, calendula) near or among brassicas helps keep pests away; and/or make our cabbage moth decoy (details on our blog page)
leaves make a pretty blue dye for yarns
cross-pollinates readily with cabbages, broccolis, brussels sprouts, cauliflowers, kohlrabis, kales, collards, and other Brassica oleracea cultivars; recommend saving seed from only one variety at a time
