Tips
A delicious and reliable variety, adapted for late cold weather. Short, sturdy plants produce large tightly packed heads, dark blue-green in color, with plenty of side shoots.
Start seeds indoors about 8 weeks before last frost, or sow outside when soil can be worked in the spring (soil temp at least 40+℉) Plant seeds 1/4” deep, and thin to about 18” apart. Harvesting main heads when 3-6” across encourages side florets to grow.
cool weather plants that like regular watering & rich soil
protect young plants from frost
companion planting aromatic herbs (lemon balm, sage, oregano, borage, hyssop, dill, rosemary) and/or high blossom flowers like tall marigolds and calendulas near or among brassicas helps keep pests away; and/or make our cabbage moth decoy (details on our blog)
cross-pollinates readily with cabbages, broccolis, brussels sprouts, cauliflowers, kohlrabis, and other Brassica oleracea varieties; recommend saving seed from only one variety at a time
